Baby/Child Naming Ceremony

The ritual of naming a child is a ceremony shared across cultures and throughout history albeit in different forms. Names carry great depths of meaning and are carefully decided. In some traditions, children are named by parents and in other cultures, by elders in the community. The reasons for name choice vary: some reflect the name of a beloved relative, some use it to symbolise the characteristics of the individual and some base their selection on their religion's holy texts.

What is common is the joy that is shared by those celebrating this very special individual.

Renaming Ceremony

Of course, naming ceremonies are not just confined to babies and children. Assuming a new name following adoption, Deed Poll change, or the joining together of families are also common.

These ceremonies focus on the origins of your new name choice and I will work to create the perfect, bespoke  Handcrafted ceremony that celebrates your new name and life choices. It can be sculpted to include any poems, readings, music or rituals you would like in order that the ceremony is the most personal it can be.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is a naming ceremony?

The length of a naming ceremony varies depending on who is included in the service (some families decide to have a ceremony for all their children at the same time), and also what you want to include within the order of service. Typically, naming ceremonies last around 10 minutes but is entirely based on your choices.

What does a naming service comprise of?

The structure of a naming service can be shaped around what you individually want from your ceremony. Usually, we may start with some music and welcoming everyone. You may wish to have poems or readings read by myself or family and friends followed by the naming tribute itself. Parental promises may follow alongside any symbolic rituals you would like to incorporate and an acknowledgement of those appointed as guardians/God parents. Certificate signing, further songs or poems can all be added to further personalise the ceremony.

Can I add something to the service on the day?

Without time limits, then if there's a last minute reading you want to have or Grandad Joe has a breakdance he just must perform for the family then as long as you're happy to add it in, we'll find a way.

Is a naming ceremony legally binding?

No, naming ceremonies are not legally binding. Registering births via a Register Office or name changes via Deed Poll or Marriage certificates are the official name changing documents however a naming ceremony is about the celebration of taking on a name and the display of love that surrounds that individual. Equally, the role of guardian/Godparents acknowledged during the ceremony are not legally binding and instead focus on the support those individuals promise to offer by way of moral or spiritual guidance.
